Longman Pronunciation Dictionary

Clare Fletcher, J.C. Wells, "Longman Pronunciation Dictionary" Longman 1991-04-03 ISBN: 0582053862 112 pages PDF 1,1 MB

Reviews:A Must For Actors*

The Longman Pronunciation Dictionary is a highly useful tool for performing artists of the English Language. I take it with me from gig to gig and use it in rehearsals. It helps to have an understanding of the International Phonetics Alphabet (IPA) but the sound key in the introduction will guide you through its use.*This book is a must for everyone seriously interested in English pronunciation. This book shows the pronunciation of what might be typically used by newscasters. However, the idea that a person can learn to speak 'good English' is insulting to millions of people who are very proud of their own regional dialects, which may be considered by non-native speakers of English as 'bad'. If you want to learn to speak 'good' English, hop in a time machine and go back to a time when 'standards' were more severely enforced. (Say, Axis countries in the late thirties.)

How To Teach Pronunciation (Book with Audio CD)

How To Teach Pronunciation (Book with Audio CD)

Gerald Kelly How To Teach Pronunciation (Book with Audio CD)"
Pearson ESL 2001-05-15 ISBN: 0582429757 160 pages PDF mp3 15,1 21,7 MB

Like most books in the "How to.." series, such as How to Teach Grammar (How To...), "How to Teach Pronunciation" by Gerald Kelly is an awesome book for teachers in need of some advice and input on the area of pronunciation.
The book has a variety of chapters on different aspects. It begins with the basics, (vowel and consonant sounds), and builds up to intonation and connected speech. There are excellent chapters on stress, sentence stress and more. Every chapter has sample lessons that illustrate some great ideas for teaching. They are all very adaptable.
The book has some excellent theoretical aspects, giving rules for connected speech and the like, for example. The theory is very clear, gives you a good run down on the terminology and keeps it all very real. The book really was written for the working teacher.
Choosing this one or Sound Foundations (Teacher Development) is a tough call. I would tend to go with both, as they have both got some serious advantages over each other.
Either way, I found this book an excellent source of new direction, new clarity and new focus on the ever present pronunciation blues. Totally recommended!

It helps students to express themselves clearly and confidently by training them in the key areas of pronunciation.
There is practice of individual sounds, with a guide to suitable exercises for speakers of particular languages.
There is a focus on lexical sets.
Training is given in stress and intonation patterns for accurate, functional use.
Help is provided with the features of connected speech.

English Grammar For Dummies

English Grammar For Dummies

A few years ago, a magazine sponsored a contest for the comment most likely to end a conversation. The winning entry? "I teach English grammar." Just throw that line out at a party; everyone around you will clam up or start saying "whom."

Why does grammar make everyone so nervous? Probably because English teachers, for decades – no, for centuries – have been making a big deal out of grammar in classrooms, diagramming sentences and drilling the parts of speech, clauses, and verbals into students until they beg for mercy. Happily, you don't have to learn all those technical terms of English grammar – and you certainly don't have to diagram sentences – in order to speak and write correct English.

So rest assured – English Grammar For Dummies will probably never make your English teacher's top-ten list of must-read books, because you won't have to diagram a single sentence. What you will discover are fun and easy strategies that can help you when you're faced with such grammatical dilemmas as the choice between "I" and "me," "had gone" and "went," and "who" and "whom." With English Grammar For Dummies, you won't have to memorize a long list of meaningless rules (well, maybe a couple in the punctuation chapter!), because when you understand the reason for a particular word choice, you'll pick the correct word automatically.

English Grammar For Dummies covers many other topics as well, such as the following:

* Verbs, adjectives, and adverbs – oh my!
* Preposition propositions and pronoun pronouncements
* Punctuation: The lowdown on periods, commas, colons, and all those other squiggly marks
* Possession: It's nine-tenths of grammatical law
* Avoiding those double negative vibes
* How to spice up really boring sentences (like this one)
* Top Ten lists on improving your proofreading skills and ways to learn better grammar

Just think how improving your speaking and writing skills will help you in everyday situations, such as writing a paper for school, giving a presentation to your company's big wigs, or communicating effectively with your family. You will not only gain the confidence in knowing you're speaking or writing well, but you'll also make a good impression on those around you!

The A to Z of Correct English

The A to Z of Correct English
How To Books Ltd, Pages: 203 English PDF Size: 1.4 MB

The A–Z of Correct English is a reference book which has been written for the student and the general reader. It aims to tackle the basic questions about spelling, punctuation, grammar and word usage that the student and the general reader are likely to ask. Throughout the book there are clear explanations, and exemplar sentences where they are needed. When it’s helpful to draw attention to spelling rules and patterns, these are given so that the reader is further empowered to deal with hundreds of related words. The aim always has been to make the reader more con?dent and increasingly self-reliant. This is a fast-track reference book. It is not a dictionary although, like a dictionary, it is arranged alphabetically. It concentrates on problem areas; it anticipates di?culties; it invites cross-references. By exploring punctuation, for example, and paragraphing, it goes far beyond a dictionary’s terms of reference. It is not intended to replace a dictionary; it rather supplements it. Once, in an evening class, one of my adult students said, ‘If there’s a right way to spell a word, I want to know it.’ On another occasion, at the end of a punctuation session on possessive apostrophes, a college student said rather angrily, ‘Why wasn’t I told this years ago?’ This book has been written to answer all the questions that my students over the years have needed to ask. I hope all who now use it will have their questions answered also and enjoy the con?dence and the mastery that this will bring.

Alexander's "Longman English Grammar" is among the best of its type I have seen, though not without some drawbacks.

The coverage is exceptionally comprehensive, going over a large number of structures and forms that will keep most students going for a long time. The covers not only the main structures, but also some more specialised forms that students may need to be familiar with.

The explanations are generally easy to understand, though sometimes they get a little confusing. The examples provided are excellent and they often clear up any points of confusion that the explanations may have left the reader with.

Perhaps the biggest plus for this book is the fact that they include a section of exercises called "Context". Very few grammar practice books do this, prefering instead to have only sentence level practice. Alexander has provided an excellent opportunity to practice grammar in a wider context of language. The only pity is that he did not provide more like it, but some is better than none, and this alone makes the book worth getting.

Alexander's book is one of the best grammar practice books out there, and is an indispensible tool for the English student. If you can get one, I recommend doing so.
