cannoneer - A serviceman in the artillery.
Synonyms: gunner, artilleryman, machine gunner
Usage: You were a cannoneer that day there, and you were among the first to enter the accursed fortress when it fell.
aspirant - One who aspires, as to advancement, honors, or a high position.
Synonyms: aspirer, hopeful, wannabe,
Usage: But the thing has to be done scientifically, or the last state of the aspirant may be worse than the first.
circumlocution - The use of unnecessarily wordy and indirect language.
Synonyms: ambage, periphrasis, evasion
Usage: She saw through his circumlocutions and was able to discern that he didn't have the money to pay her back.
cutoff - A route shorter than the usual one.
Synonyms: shortcut, crosscut
Usage: My father claimed he knew a great cutoff, but it turned out to be longer than our original route.
magnum opus - A great work, especially a literary or artistic masterpiece.
Synonyms: masterpiece
Usage: "Paradise Lost" is generally considered to be Milton's magnum opus.
